Four words that
are not interchangeable

“Genuine leather” is a legal minimum, not a grade. It covers full-grain and it covers the pressed-fibre backing of a cheap belt equally well. So we do not use it. Every article on this site names its actual class, and where we use a lesser grade because it is the right material for the job, the page says which one and why.

How to read a hide

VollnarbenlederFull-grain: The top layer of the hide with the grain intact. Strongest, and the only class that develops a real patina.; 30
NarbenlederTop-grain: Grain lightly sanded and finished for an even surface. More uniform, more colour-stable, slightly less durable.; 07
SpaltlederSplit: The lower layer, pigmented on the surface. We use it in two places and say so on both.; 02
